Plants


Depending on when you visit the Elfin Forest the plants will be in different phases of their life cycle. The southern coast of California experiences a different weather pattern than the temperate climate found in most of the United States. Rain falls mostly between December and March. It is sunniest in the Spring and Fall and often foggy here at the coast in Summer. Many plants go dormant or lose their leaves in the Summer. They will start to show new growth when the rain starts in Winter. Flowers will be most prominent from February through April. Increasingly California is experiencing drought. Although average annual rainfall is 17 inches (430 mm), some years it may only be half of that which impacts plant growth.

The 90-acre Elfin Forest Natural Area contains six plant communities. The first three: Coastal Salt Marsh, Coastal Brackish Marsh, and Riparian Woodland Fringe are in the estuary or along its immediate edge and are not accessible to visitors.

The remaining three are Pygmy Oak Woodland, Coastal Sage Scrub, and Chaparral and are readily visible along the boardwalk. These communities do not have distinct boundaries and many plants overlap between the communities. Below are significant species from each of these plant communities. Coastal Sage Scrub

Coastal sage scrub is a common plant community in the Morro Bay area, but nearly weed-free areas such as the Elfin Forest are rare. Thirty years of volunteer labor by “Weed Warriors” has made the difference. Non-native grasses and other invasive plants still demand the attention of the Friends of El Moro Elfin Forest. Most plants here are semi-woody and many branched. Soil moisture commonly available in winter and spring. These plants are drought tolerant. Many lose their leaves during dry seasons (drought deciduous).

Chaparral

The Maritime Chaparral is found on sandy soils of old stabilized sand dunes, particularly on north-facing slopes. Dense patches prevent shrubby growth below. Seed germination is enhanced by fire.
